Private Painting Sessions

It can be difficult trying to learn to paint on your own. There’s a ton of information out there, and it can be pretty confusing.

Meet me for a private painting session in my studio in Lakewood Colorado, or over Zoom. I'll help you sort through the confusion, and get you headed in the right direction.

Private painting lessons are open to adults and kids age 12 (or so) and up.

Private lessons can be structured and focus on color theory, technique, composition... learning the basics and applying them to paintings.

They can also be less structured for students who need help with a specific painting or are feeling stuck and need a bit of guidance.

Either way, the sessions are custom tailored to individual interests and experience levels, and are available in oils or acrylics.

If you'd like to learn with a friend, semi-private lessons are also available.

My philosophy
I don't believe there is a right or wrong way to paint - there are a thousand different ways to approach any painting.
However, there are results; some results you like, some you don't. The process of becoming an artist is in part- learning how to replicate what you did to get the results you like.

I guide and instruct while encouraging students to think for themselves and take creative risks.

It's good to know the basics, but painting is ultimately a form of expression. Think of it like this: toddlers can express themselves, but they do it better once they get a better grip on verbal language. Likewise, once you understand the language of painting, you'll be better able to express yourself on canvas.

What to bring to your first lesson:
Bring what supplies you have (paint, brushes, a canvas or canvas board), and we'll discuss what else you'll need.
If you want help with something you're currently working on, bring it in. If you have examples (pictures or originals) of things you've done in the past, I'd love to see them!

What to expect:
In your first session we'll discuss your experience and your goals, and come up with a lesson plan that works for you.

Areas that may be covered: (based on your experience and knowledge):

  • materials

  • color theory

  • fundamentals of art

  • blending

  • brushstrokes

  • technique

  • expression

  • finding your own style
