Nature Exploded

Each of the paintings on this page were taken from patterns I found in nature.

"Ancient People of the Bonsai" (to the right) was inspired by a trip I took to the Denver Botanic Gardens. There was a section of bonsai trees that were hundreds of years old. In one tree I saw little figures in the root formation that looked like they went to sleep at the base of the tree, and never woke up.

The paintings below are all based on patterns I found in tree bark. I take a photo of a small section of bark that I find interesting, and enlarge the picture to see all of the amazing patterns. Then, I translate what I see onto canvas.
I love looking closely at things, and revealing what normally goes unseen. Sometimes the patterns remind me of a city map, with roads and rivers and parks. Other bark might remind me of cliffs and canyons.
